A 2014 experiment in a realistic simulated supermarket found subtle effects on perceived atmosphere and emotion, but no significant behavioral effects from the tested lighting settings. A separate field study across 57 clothing stores found that brightness, contrast, glare and sparkle contributed to perceived atmosphere alongside the wider interior.

The frequently repeated “90 seconds”, “85% based on color”, “80% brand recognition” and “15% category-sales increase” figures were not retained. The cited pages did not provide sufficiently traceable evidence for those precise claims or for the proposed cabinet-level sales effect.
How a Dual-Zone RGB Cabinet Works
“Dual-zone” describes independent visual functions, not two versions of the same light. On the Billionways header cabinet, the perimeter uses RGB LEDs and the product area uses white LEDs. Separate brightness and power controls allow the two layers to be balanced.

This separation solves a basic problem with single-zone colored light. Saturated ambient color can create a strong fixture identity, but the same light may shift the perceived colors of product labels. White task light can preserve visual information while the RGB border supplies the decorative layer.
Specify Measurable Lighting Variables
“Blue”, “warm” and “bright” are not sufficient production specifications. A useful lighting brief identifies what should be measured, where it should be measured and what variation is acceptable.
Hue, saturation and brightness
RGB scenes have at least three independent dimensions. A pale blue at low intensity can feel very different from a saturated blue at maximum output. Record the controller value or preset for each approved scene rather than the color name alone.
Illuminance and uniformity
Illuminance describes the light falling on a surface, usually measured in lux. Take readings across representative product positions. A high average can hide dark corners, hotspots and reflections, so compare minimum, maximum and average values at the relevant plane.
Correlated color temperature
CCT characterises the appearance of white light. It does not describe colored RGB light and does not, by itself, establish how faithfully packaging will appear. Specify it for the white product-light zone and verify it at the intended dimming level.
Color rendition
Color rendering concerns how a source reveals object colors. The CIE has documented limitations of applying the traditional CRI alone to white LEDs, while the US Department of Energy describes ANSI/IES TM-30 as a set of complementary measures and graphics. For color-critical products, request measured data rather than an unsupported “high CRI” label.
Glare, flicker and reflections
A bright exposed LED can be uncomfortable even when the measured shelf illuminance is reasonable. Inspect the cabinet from customer eye level, staff eye level and oblique angles. Record visible LED points, reflections from glossy packs and any camera-visible flicker relevant to promotional photography or video.
Build Practical Color Scenes
A scene is a repeatable combination of perimeter color, perimeter brightness, white-light brightness and header state. It should be defined by function rather than by a promise about consumer psychology.

Do not assume that “green means healthy”, “blue means trustworthy” or “red makes people buy”. Those shortcuts ignore culture, context, brightness, saturation, product meaning and individual preference. A scene should solve a visual and operational problem that can be observed.

The 1 June 2027 date is the UK government’s stated intention for commencing the comprehensive vaping and nicotine advertising ban.
