1. Concept Intake: Start With What You Know
The first enquiry does not need to answer every engineering question. It needs to explain the intended result well enough for the missing questions to become visible.
Three useful starting points
A hand drawing with approximate height, width, shelf count and product position.
Logo files, brand colours, product dimensions, store photographs and reference fixtures.
Visual renders or design intent that still requires manufacturing development and costing.

What to include in the brief

Reference images are useful for direction, but they rarely reveal load, tolerances, wall thickness, fixings or packaging constraints. The project team still needs to define those variables before production.
2. 3D Development: Make the Decisions Visible
A 3D model translates the brief into geometry. It allows the client and manufacturer to discuss the same object before material is cut, bent, moulded or printed.
Depending on project scope, the design pack may include:
- overall and component dimensions;
- front, side, rear and internal views;
- shelf, divider, pusher, lock, hinge and lighting positions;
- material and finish call-outs;
- graphic panels and printable-area templates;
- assembly interfaces and packaging orientation;
- a preliminary bill of materials.
Revisions at this stage are normal. A shelf may need more clearance, a header may need a different proportion, or the pack size may expose wasted shipping volume. The goal is not to defend the first render. The goal is to reduce costly ambiguity before sampling.
Design freeze
Once geometry, materials, graphics and main hardware are approved, the project reaches a design freeze for sampling. Later changes remain possible, but they may alter cost, timing, tooling, packaging or the need for another sample.
3. Materials and Engineering: Choose by Function
A display may combine clear panels, an opaque housing, a structural frame, printed surfaces, lighting and moving hardware. The material decision therefore happens component by component rather than through a single label such as “plastic display”.

The British Plastics Federation describes ABS as a family of materials that can offer toughness, surface quality and ease of processing, with grades tailored for different requirements. That is why the exact grade and component design matter. “ABS” alone does not prove a finished fixture’s load capacity, scratch resistance or fire performance.
4. Quotation: Price the Agreed Specification
A useful quotation makes the commercial assumptions visible. It should identify the quoted configuration, quantity, main materials, finish, branding, packaging basis, tooling or setup charges, lead-time basis and delivery terms.

Fabricated acrylic, metal and board components can sometimes avoid dedicated injection tooling. Injection-moulded components may require tooling but can make sense at suitable volume. MOQ and mould cost therefore follow the chosen process; neither should be advertised as universally zero.
5. Artwork and Colour: Translate the Brand Into Materials
Branding can be supplied as finished artwork or developed from a client’s logo files and guidelines. In either case, printable areas, bleed, resolution, colour mode, legal copy and graphic replacement method should be approved before sampling.

Pantone is a reference, not a promise of identical physics
Pantone describes its system as a shared colour language for design and production, and its physical guides show the intended appearance more reliably than an uncalibrated screen. Even so, the same colour reference can appear different on powder-coated metal, moulded plastic and printed film because gloss, texture, opacity, ink and lighting change perception.
For colour-sensitive projects, agree the Pantone reference, substrate, gloss level, viewing light and acceptance method. A signed physical sample or approved colour chip provides a stronger production reference than “match the logo on our website”.
6. Sampling: Test the Shared Interpretation
A sample converts drawings and written assumptions into a physical object. It is the point where dimensions, fit, finish, graphics, lighting, doors, drawers, locks, pushers and assembly can be reviewed together.

Packaging development can run alongside sampling when the dimensions are stable. Ordering final custom packaging before the product geometry is controlled can create avoidable rework, so the overlap should be agreed project by project.
7. Packaging: Design for the Distribution Route
Packaging protects the approved product through stacking, vibration, impact, humidity and repeated handling. The International Safe Transit Association treats distribution hazards and packaged-product testing as inputs to effective package design, which is why the actual route matters.
A project packaging specification may define:
- assembled, partly assembled or flat-pack orientation;
- one or more units per carton;
- corrugated-board grade and closure method;
- EPE, PE foam, corner blocks, dividers or surface protection;
- carton dimensions, gross weight and handling marks;
- pallet footprint, stack height and restraint method;
- drop, compression or vibration testing where the risk warrants it.
A package should not be described as “damage-proof”. Its job is to manage defined hazards at an acceptable level. Testing and shipment feedback help refine the design for repeat orders.
8. Bulk Production and Quality Control
Bulk production repeats the approved specification. Quality control therefore needs measurable checkpoints rather than a general promise that the finished order will “look right”.

Inspection scope should match product risk. Critical electrical or locking functions may justify unit-level checks, while cosmetic and dimensional characteristics may be inspected through an agreed sampling plan. The purchase specification should say which approach applies.
9. Palletisation and Shipment Handover
The final handover should make the physical shipment and commercial documents agree. Carton count, gross and net weight, dimensions, pallet quantity, labels and loading method all affect the freight plan.

- record pallet condition and load restraint before collection;

A shipment-ready order is the result of controlled decisions made much earlier. Good pallet photographs cannot compensate for an unclear brief or an unapproved sample; they complete the evidence chain rather than replace it.

Do I need finished CAD files to request a quotation?
